Behind The Scenes

.

Being the B.T.S. shooter for a project like this, plays to my strengths of observation. My antenna is set to its highest sensitivity, and I am given the best seat in the house, lucky me…

Along with those parameters I am not responsible for the outcome of the main material being shot. I didn’t realize it at first but my role is a wonderful relief from the normal duties of managing a photo set. Tony Ward handles all of the angles of managing technical set up, theme, and workflow. Creative Direction, and wardrobe, is handled By Kevin Vaughn Harris. Tony manages all of this while being a thoughtful and gracious host. Then when all of that is together and the subject is on set he (Tony Ward) has to switch gears and instantly become an artist who can communicate with the subject in a way that allows the best material to come out of them…

Our subject for this shoot was Megan G. McGory. When I arrived I immediately noticed her calm sophistication, and an overall grace with her movements that suggested dancing or athletic talent. While in wardrobe with K.Vaughn Harris she (Megan) proposed a large variety of outfit suggestions and poses. Michael Connor handles makeup and hair. I admired his ability to create a finished look that enhanced Megan’s features, yet understated enough so as to allow the rest of the theme to come to life. Michael and Megan worked very well together while using custom scarves supplied by K.Vaughn. After several renditions they (Mike and Meg) created several looks combining hair, scarves, and poses that brought out the best in all of it.  From the candid observer’s point of view the aforementioned traits are the best to have in a subject, so I was excited for Tony to have such a talented subject to shoot.

When on set watching Tony direct the subject and support staff is like watching a conductor of an orchestra. He is using his direction to allow the best performance to come out of the artists. Then at the right moments he is capturing the results of all of their talent. I was grateful for my “best seat in the house” position, to watch and record such a remarkable display of talent and a friendly attitude…
